It’s time for our latest ‘Getting to know you’ feature! Here, Hazel Hogben, Senior Vice President of Human Resources, gives us an insight into her role after joining Interstate Hotels and Resorts earlier this year.

  • Tell us about your role and what it involves?

Primarily, my position involves leading a great team of dedicated HR professionals who have many years of experience and an endless passion for the HR function and the overall industry. Another important part of my role is working with the wider Interstate team to provide them with support and bring out their skills to address the many and various opportunities we have within our organisation.  At the heart of everything I do is making small but continuous improvements to how we attract, hire, retain, engage and develop people who are our most valuable asset. They make Interstate what we are!

  • What does a typical day in your role involve?

I’m not sure that there is such a thing!  Every day is different and brings new opportunities to think differently to find solutions.  Whether it’s for the opening of a hotel in a new country, to how we can be innovative in our hiring techniques, every day I am looking for new ideas to give us sustainable solutions to the various challenges that the industry is facing across the whole of Europe.  It’s not all creativity though… we still have the admin to do!

  • What’s your favourite part of your role?

Being in our hotels, listening and learning, working with our teams to get a better understanding of how by making one or two small adjustments to our HR practices we can make a positive impact on them and our guests.

  • What, in your opinion, makes Interstate stand out from the crowd?

Many organisations talk the talk when it comes to the People Agenda but not only do we walk the walk, we have built our mission and goals around our people. Each and every one of us believes that is how we will win in this very competitive landscape, and we live it every day, not just one week a year to tick a box. It’s an ethos that I’m really proud to be part of.
