Our next instalment of our Getting to Know You feature is here and this time we’re chatting to Gerard Ryan – Director of New Openings & Transitions at Interstate Hotels & Resorts.

Tell us about your role and what it involves?

My role is a new position for Interstate, which makes it a really exciting opportunity.

Once a new hotel joins the Interstate family, I become the lead contact for the owner – from the design stage and pre-opening activities including recruitment, through to when the hotel opens.

Throughout all of these stages, there is regular input from the Technical Services team within Interstate on Design and Construction, Food & Beverage and IT, along with regular linkage with the brand to ensure successful hotel openings on behalf of our owners. Once the hotel is open, it becomes part of one of our operating regions.

The role perfectly combines my previous operational experience as a General Manager along with recent involvement in a number of new openings.

What does a typical day in your role involve?

As the role is still in its infancy, the breadth of the position is still being developed. However, each day is extremely varied and involves dealing with multiple brands and different owners, which is a big part of this role’s appeal.

My work involves regular contact with owners and architects through the design stage of each project to ensure that the final plans for a hotel layout meet requirements from every perspective.

Brand consistency and linkage is key to this position to ensure that the latest, and where possible, future standards are fully adhered to. It’s also incredibly important to keep everyone within Interstate updated on the status of each project, to ensure as a management company we are resourced and fully prepared.

What’s your favourite part of your role?

Working with so many people both within and outside of the organisation, representing the owners’ best interests and dealing with an enormous array of fantastic leading hotel brands.

What, in your opinion, makes Interstate stand out from the crowd?

Interstate stands out from the crowd because it allows people the opportunity to grow. And as an organisation, they are not afraid to try new things and challenge the status quo. The introduction of this new role is a testimony to that!
