A heroic team member who acted fast and saved the life of a customer at the Holiday Inn Farnborough has been presented with a prestigious ‘Colleague of the Year’ award at the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG)’s Europe Hotel Star Awards.
Richard Boyd, lifestyle consultant at the hotel’s Spirit Health and Leisure Club, put his lifesaving training into action when customer Jim Druett was found face-down in the bottom of the pool.
After being alerted by health club members to the situation, Richard immediately raised the pool alarm, asking for the pool to be cleared before he kicked off his shoes and entered the water.
He went under the water and picked Jim up, using techniques learnt on his pool attendant’s course to tow him to the side and check his breathing.
Jim was unresponsive and not breathing, so along with other health club members, Richard lifted Jim from the pool, checked his airways and performed CPR until emergency services arrived.
Jim was then taken to hospital where he remained in a coma for 22-hours, before spending a week in intensive care.
However, thanks to the quick-thinking and care delivered by Richard and the emergency services, Jim made a full recovery and was eventually released from hospital.
Jane Standing is the hotel’s general manager.
Said Jane, who nominated Richard for the award: “Richard Boyd is an outstanding employee who reacted quickly, followed the training he had been given and undoubtedly played a huge part in saving Jim.
“I am extremely proud and grateful for all that Richard did on that difficult and distressing day and he is most worthy of an IHG Colleague of the Year Star Award.”
Nicholas Northam, Interstate’s managing director for the UK, said: “We are so proud of Richard for his actions. He acted fast and used his knowledge to save the life of a customer. This award is very well deserved and we’re proud to have him as a member of the Interstate team.”
Two further Interstate Europe properties were also nominated for awards at the event, including the Holiday Inn Basingstoke for Sales Excellence, and the Holiday Inn Express Glasgow City Centre - Theatreland, which was a finalist in the Revenue Management Excellence Category.
Elaine Jarvis, Breakfast Supervisor at the Glasgow Theatreland hotel was also named as a finalist in the Best Colleague of the Year Holiday Inn Express category for successfully implementing a new Holiday Inn Express breakfast trial for IHG.
Nicholas added: “The strength of our hotels and team members nominated for these awards is testimony to our outstanding offer as the nation’s only third-party hotel management company.”
