Getting to know you: Gerard Ryan

Our Experience. Your Success.©

Meet Gerard Ryan, General Manager of the forthcoming Hotel Indigo London-Aldgate, which is set to open its doors in 2018.

Tell us about your role and what it involves?

Gerard Ryan: I started work at the Hotel Indigo London - Aldgate in May last year, having previously opened another one of Interstate’s UK hotels, Holiday Inn Stevenage.

My role as a pre-opening General Manager is hugely varied and currently it’s focused very much on building the hotel team, as well as ensuring we’re hitting all of the milestones we need to, as we work towards opening next year.

The Hotel Indigo brand has a huge community emphasis and as such, I’m also spending time getting to know and understand the hotel neighbourhood, so we can draw on what’s around us here in Aldgate and really bring it to life within the hotel.

What does a typical day in your role involve?

GR: No two days are ever the same in our industry. I could be interviewing a potential new member of the team, building the first-year budget or reviewing the designer’s plans to make sure what’s on paper doesn’t just look good, but that it will work and function operationally.

During the pre-opening phase there is an enormous amount of work going on and it’s my job to coordinate and communicate, keeping the hotel’s owners informed of progress as well as the wider Interstate team, IHG, the developers and the team here on the ground.

Equally, as the hotel will be home to a new Theo’s Italian Kitchen Restaurant, I’m also busy liaising with Theo Randall’s team to ensure there is alignment in our approach towards recruitment, menu development, PR and marketing etc.

What’s your favourite part of your role?

GR: I love meeting and working with so many different people from all walks of life, including our team, our suppliers, our guests and our neighbours.

There are so many personalities involved in a hotel operation and it keeps every day interesting.

What, in your opinion, makes Interstate stand out from the crowd?

GR: Interstate offers a great wealth of experience across all functions and being able to draw on that expertise is invaluable, both for myself, the owners and the team at the hotel.

Gerard is set to open the new Hotel Indigo London-Aldgate in spring 2018.
